Why four matching tyres is the cleanest result

If replacing only two, where should the new tyres go?
Michelin generally recommends placing the new or least-worn pair on the rear axle, unless a tyre professional or vehicle-specific requirement indicates otherwise. Deeper rear tread supports rear stability and water evacuation on wet roads.
Keep axle pairs compatible
Tyres on the same axle should match the required size and specification, and normally the same model and similar tread depth. A temporary spare is an exception intended to get the vehicle to professional service.
AWD and 4×4 vehicles require extra care
Differences in rolling circumference can affect some drivetrain systems. Check the owner’s manual and vehicle-manufacturer tolerances. Do not assume that a visually similar replacement is acceptable.
